Only 926 kilometers separate Japan and South Korea, and despite lasting feuds and geopolitical angst lingering between them for over a thousand years , genetically the people are similar. Especially compared to the USA, Japan and South Korea have homogeneous populations, and they are physically isolated - Japan remains a true archipelago and South Korea effectively exists as an island surrounded by water on three sides and hemmed in by its reclusive northern cousin. Even though the nations have taken two very distinct evolutionary tracks to the present, modern world, their societies exist very much in tandem with each other.
